SeaStar Corporation was founded in September
1987 for the purpose of the development of photo-sensors originally. The main developed
products are in use being integrated in: copy machine; false bill detector; safety
device on platform; passenger head counter; etc. It was when we had the opportunity
to see Prof. Fumiya Furuno, the National University of Job-skill Development, at
a certain forum on photo-sensors, that SeaStar Corporation started in on the development
of welfare devices. Prof. Furuno, who had been teaching job training for the visually-handicapped
people in the university, gave us a suggestion that we could integrate the photo-sensor
technologies into the white cane brought by the visually handicapped people. When
the NEDO (New Energy Development Organization), an extra-departmental body of the
Ministry of International Trade and Industry, invited the enterprises for subsidies
in connection with the enactment of the Welfare Goods Act in October 1993, we applied
for the grant with an "Electronic Sensor Cane",which is a white cane having
a photo-sensortherein to detect an obstacle ahead on the road, and which had beendeveloped
under the guidance of Prof. Furuno. Thus we successfully obtained the subsidy. With
this as a start, our business area has expanded from a development of photo-sensors
to the development of the welfare devices applying photo-sensor technologies.
